What’s the difference between a REALTOR® and a real estate agent?
A REALTOR® belongs to the National Association of REALTORS® and is bound professionally to a Code of Ethics. A real estate agent has a license to buy and sell real estate.
Am I required join a REALTOR® Association?
While we encourage you to join other real estate professionals by becoming a REALTOR® member, the choice to join is a decision left to you and your managing broker.
What do I get for my dues?
Your payment includes your dues for NAR (National Association of REALTORS®), TAR (Tennessee Association of REALTORS®) and your local board. As a REALTOR®, you are receiving benefits such as Professional Development, Legislative Affairs, Dispute Resolution, Community Involvement and Communications.
Are partial payments available for membership dues?
No. All payments are due at the time of application or upon receipts of annual dues invoice.
Is there a refund policy?
GNAR has a no refund policy.
Can I belong to a different REALTOR® Association than my broker?
You can join any REALTOR® Association where your broker has membership. If there is an association that your broker is not affiliated with and you want to be a part of that association, you can apply for a secondary membership once you have established primary membership at an association where your broker is affiliated.
What happens after I complete my application?
You will have a “Provisional member” status until completing your required orientation session. That allows you full REALTOR® privileges and obligations for up to 90 days – during which your orientation session must be completed. Your application will then go before the GNAR Membership Committee for submission to the GNAR Board of Directors who will ultimately approve your membership.
What is Orientation?
Orientation is an 8-hour class that is required for all new members to complete within a 90-day timeframe. This class will cover your Code of Ethics (required by NAR) and Risk Management, as well introduce you to the Realtor® organization. There is 6 hours CE for the class.
What happens if I go past my 90 day window?
If you do not complete your orientation within 90 days you will forfeit your application fee and will have to reapply for membership, including the application fee and completed application.
When can I use the REALTOR® logo and trademark?
Once you have submitted your application and dues for membership you are a Provisional member.
What’s the difference between primary and secondary membership?
Primary membership indicates that that you are paying your NAR and TAR dues through a particular REALTOR® association. Secondary membership means that you are already paying your national and state dues with another local REALTOR® association; therefore you only pay local dues with your secondary association.
Where can I find my NRDS (National REALTOR® Database) number?
You can obtain your NRDS number by accessing the “Member Login” at www.gnar.org.
How can I get involved with GNAR?
GNAR is a volunteer-run REALTOR® organization with several levels of involvement. You can be serve on a committee, be elected to a leadership position on the Board of Directors, work a shift in our annual Habitat for Humanity build or attend networking opportunities just to name a few.
Where can I get forms and contracts?
All forms can be found at www.gnar.org and www.tarnet.com, the TAR website.
What are the annual membership dues?
GNAR REALTOR® membership dues are paid on an annual basis and are due each on December 31. Membership renewals are invoiced on October 1 of each year. Dues must be paid no later than December 31 in order to avoid fines. For members joining during the year, fees are pro-rated monthly. Please contact the GNAR Membership Department at membership@gnar.org to verify your membership amount.
What is a REALTOR Emeritus?
A REALTOR® Emeritus is any person who has held membership in the National Association as a REALTOR®, REALTOR-Associate® or a combination of both, for a cumulative period of 40 years in one or more Associations of REALTORS®. Upon approval by the Board of Directors of the National Association of REALTORS®, no further payment of dues is necessary to GNAR, TAR or NAR. For more information, please visit www.realtor.org.
